One way tounderstand the violence that occurred in World War 1 is to examine the number of deaths. Exact figures are still in dispute, the questionable accuracy of the recording system used and the loss or destruction of a number of official documents. The data reflect numbers from several sources and are consistant with most experts' current estimates (PBS):
